Over the course of a year, we collect sufficient galls to make a batch of ink. It is unusual to find more than a few galls on each tree. The foraging process takes time and local knowledge to locate the trees and ensure the wasp's lifecycle has completed before harvest. The galls are crushed, and then cooked in water. The tannins leach out, producing a warm, ochre or tan-coloured solution. To this we add a binder to protect the pigments, and ensure the colour cannot be brushed off the page.

We then allow the ink to dance alchemically on the page: to create the rocks and tors of our landscape, we add iron, which transforms the ochre to blacks and greys. Next, a solution of tin is added to create the foreground. Tin lightens the blacks, and often adds new texture to the piece as tin will shrink as it dries, creating cracks in the ink. Finally, a sprinkle of citric acid crystals are added across the top. Not too soon, or they will wash away, but at just the right moment it is possible to sprinkle stars and snowflakes into the sky.

Choose a beautiful abstract Dartmoor landscape in a clean, simple frame that allows the oak gall ink to take centre stage. In 2005, however, the fruit was red by mid-July. In the recording-breaking heat of summer 2026, the fruit had also turned by mid-July. At what point do we adjust our expectations if two decades of intermittent observation has shown a new timeline?

The piece traces rowan's own ecology — a pioneer species, quick to arrive and quick to make way — against the much longer memory held in Dartmoor's peat, where pollen has recorded the arrival of willow and birch for more than eight thousand years, and hazel and oak for more than seven thousand. Rowan itself is almost absent from that record: its pollen is heavy and insect-carried rather than windborne, so the tree that colonises fastest is the one the peat forgets.

The broadsheet asks a plain question — how do we know what normal is, once we've stopped noticing?

A broadsheet is a single large sheet printed on one side, traditionally used for proclamations, news, and educational texts — a fitting format for a piece built from a public, ongoing act of noticing. Shifting Baseline is hand-set in wood and metal type, letterpress printed by Princetown Press in 2026.
