Recording the Shifting Baseline - large format originals - letterpress series
106 x 89 cm framed original botanical ink specimen with letterpress printing
About
A meditation on timing of ripening fruit and our relationship to seasons.
Featuring a biochrome wash made from oak galls and rowan fruit, foraged on Dartmoor. Set below the wash: a short letterpress text on the pollen record of Dartmoor's upland — how the land keeps its own memory underfoot, retrieved by paleoecologists from peat and counted grain by grain. Printed in an edition of ten, in synthetic ink, by Princetown Press in 2026.
Large imperial paper, framed to 106 × 89 cm. Framing included.
Each piece is unique. Some works in this series have already found a home; please get in touch to see which ones remain. Certificate of authenticity included.
The text is also available as a broadsheet.
Shown at: Traces, Gather & Moor, and featured in FT's HTSI (online and print editions).

Oak gall ink has been used as official record keeping ink for hundreds of years due to its permanence. We anticipate the botanical ink will change over time. Every precaution has been taken to slow this inevitable change, including using UV-protective art glass for the framing. Still, we encourage you to take a photo of the work every year on its anniversary so that you can record its progression over time. The letterpress ink is a custom blend from British ink makers, Hawthorn, and rated above 5 on the Blue Wool Scale and rated at the level needed for artists.
